King's College NHS Foundation Trust, London
A leading teaching hospital, over the last 170 years King’s has built its reputation as a world class hospital.
One of London’s largest and busiest hospitals, with a strong profile of local services, King’s primarily serves the boroughs of Lambeth, Southwark, Lewisham and Bromley.
Specialist services are available to patients across a wider catchment area, providing nationally and internationally recognised work in liver disease and transplantation, neurosciences, haemato-oncology and foetal medicine.
King’s is one of four partners in the Academic Health Science Centre, King’s Health Partners, that collaborates on world-class research, driving the Trust’s vision to become the best medical research campus in Europe.
The Challenge
Due to the design of the buildings and materials used during construction (concrete, steel and Low-E glass), many hospitals suffer from poor mobile signal. The Boost Pro team were therefore tasked with improving mobile phone signal within two key parts of the hospital:
Denmark Hill Site
Staff offices and meeting rooms have suffered from poor mobile signal for a number of years. Located in an industrial-style building, a combination of materials used in construction and poor external signal has resulted in poor indoor connectivity for mobile phone users.
The Haven
The Haven provides excellent medical care, support and forensic examinations which are accessible night and day by police, medical or self-referral. Opened as part of the Department of Sexual Health at King’s College Hospital, it covers 12 boroughs in south London.
Due to the critical and sensitive nature of the work in The Haven, a strong consistent mobile signal is absolutely vital to ensure the department can operate to its full capacity.
The Solution
Denmark
Following a consultation period, Boost Pro designed a passive DAS system to improve all four networks – O2, EE, Vodafone and Three – to ensure staff and all visitors had a strong mobile signal in key areas of the building.
Due to the layout of the offices and meeting rooms two repeater units were required per network, with five internal domes located throughout the building to dissipate the signal. Two external antennas were used.
Haven
As there are a number of different stakeholders involved in the process, all mobile networks were required to be improved. Boost Pro engineers designed a passive DAS across the three zones of the department.
One repeater per unit was required with three internal dome antennas strategically located to ensure full signal in all areas.
This project leverages our licence-exempt Passive DAS Industrial Signal Booster. This product benefits from:
✓ 3G / 4G / LTE Voice and Data
✓ Multi-Carrier Support with Carrier Switching
✓ Indoor / Outdoor NEMA 4 Rated
✓ Network Safe
The Results
– All four major networks improved from zero to five bars – O2, EE, Vodafone and Three.
– Patients and their visiting friends and families can now use their mobile phones to make calls and access the internet from the comfort of their rooms.
– Doctors, nurses and all other staff members can use their mobile devices to assist them in carrying out their duties.
Our mobile repeater products are licence-exempt and fully meets the regulatory requirements in the UK (Ofcom SI 2018/399) and Ireland (ComReg S.I.No.283 of 2018)
