Mobile Connectivity Improvement Project

University of Strathclyde, Glasgow

The University of Strathclyde is a public research university located in Glasgow, Scotland. Founded in 1796 as the Andersonian Institute, it is Glasgow’s second-oldest university, having received its royal charter in 1964 as the first technological university in the United Kingdom. Taking its name from the historic Kingdom of Strathclyde, it is Scotland’s third-largest university by number of students, with students and staff from over 100 countries.

The institution was named University of the Year 2012 by Times Higher Education and again in 2019, becoming the first university to receive this award twice.

The Challenge - New Student Union

Opened in September 2021, the new “Strath Union” building suffered from poor mobile phone connectivity. Like many modern, sustainably-designed buildings, this is caused by the materials used in construction blocking the signal, including Low-E glass, wood, and steel.

The team at Strath Union were keen for students to have a strong and consistent mobile signal to for multiple reasons, including improving health and safety, increasing dwell time, and enabling POS systems.

Due to the Union opening at the beginning of September, the timescales were tight – Boost Pro had to be able to design and install a solution within two weeks from the initial survey.

The Solution

Following a detailed survey and consultation period the Boost Pro engineers designed a Passive Distributed Antenna system (DAS) to improve all four networks – O2, EE, Vodafone, and Three – across the high traffic bar, restaurant and balcony areas.

This project leverages our licence-exempt Passive DAS Industrial Signal Booster. This product benefits from:

✓ 3G / 4G / LTE Voice and Data
✓ Multi-Carrier Support with Carrier Switching
✓ Indoor / Outdoor NEMA 4 Rated
✓ Network Safe

The Results

All areas now receive full EE, O2, Vodafone, and Three LTE voice and data coverage.

Students and staff now benefit from the health and safety, social and operational advantages of being able to use mobile devices on the move within the Union.

Our mobile repeater products are licence-exempt and fully meets the regulatory requirements in the UK (Ofcom SI 2018/399) and Ireland (ComReg S.I.No.283 of 2018)
