Mobile Connectivity Improvement Project

Royal Liverpool University Hospital

The Royal Liverpool University Hospital (RLUH) is a major teaching and research hospital located in the city of Liverpool.

It is the largest and busiest hospital in Merseyside and Cheshire, and has the largest emergency department of its kind in the UK.

The Challenge

Due to the design of the building and materials used during construction (concrete, steel and Low-E glass), many hospitals suffer from poor mobile signal.

Considering the fast paced nature of the A&E department, communication is key for both staff and members of the public. The A&E department within The Royal Liverpool University Hospital has always suffered from poor mobile phone signal which impacts the operational needs of staff, other emergency services entering the department as well as the patients.

“”Boost Pro Systems’ technical staff demonstrated a rich depth of technical knowledge and experience. Installation and communication with Trust’s IT and medical staff was carried out without issue – I was very happy with all aspects of this project.

Both clinical staff and patients within the A&E department will benefit enormously from this now improved mobile signal coverage/performance.”

-Phil Pearse,
IT Network and Telecoms Manager

The Solution

Boost Pro engineers designed a hybrid DAS for all four major networks (O2, EE, Vodafone and Three) following a detailed survey to ensure all areas of the department would be covered. This was a complex process due to the age of the building as well as well as the A&E department being fully functional 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The external signal was strong, so with strategically placed antennas we were able to transfer that signal into the building, add the gain our system applies, ansd transmit all four networks throughout the department.

Unlike other DAS configurations, our hybrid DAS does not require MNO approval which allowed us to install the system within 10 weeks of the initial survey.

This project leverages our licence-exempt Hybrid DAS Industrial Signal Booster. This product benefits from:

✓ 3G / 4G / LTE Voice and Data
✓ Multi-Carrier Support with Carrier Switching
✓ Indoor / Outdoor NEMA 4 Rated
✓ Network Safe

The Results

– All four major networks improved from zero to five bars – O2, EE, Vodafone and Three.

– Patients and their visiting friends and families can now use their mobile phones to make calls and access the internet from the comfort of their rooms.

– Doctors, nurses and all other staff members can use their mobile devices to assist them in carrying out their duties.

Our mobile repeater products are licence-exempt and fully meets the regulatory requirements in the UK (Ofcom SI 2018/399) and Ireland (ComReg S.I.No.283 of 2018)
