Mobile Connectivity Improvement Project

Edge Hill University Student Union, Ormskirk

Edge Hill University is a campus-based public university in Ormskirk, Lancashire, England, which opened in 1885 as Edge Hill College, the first non-denominational teacher training college for women in England, before admitting its first male students in 1959.[3] In 2005, Edge Hill was granted Taught Degree Awarding Powers by the Privy Council and became Edge Hill University on 18 May 2006.

The University has three faculties: Arts and Sciences, Education, and Health and Social Care; these teach at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The Challenge

Due to a weak donor (external) signal and the materials used in construction the mobile signal within the union was nonexistent across all four major networks – O2, EE, Vodafone, and Three. This is a common problem in modern, sustainable building design, where the energy-efficient materials used block radio waves from entering buildings.

This led to a number of challenges for students and staff, most notably communication and health and safety.

The Solution

Following a detailed survey and consultation period with the onsite management team, our in-house team designed a passive DAS solution to improve the signal throughout the full building.

Particular care was needed for the positioning of the external antennas due to a number of planning regulations. The team worked closely with all stakeholders to ensure a suitable location was agreed upon.
Due to the weak donor signal across all networks, high gain LPDA antennas were utilised on this project.

This project leverages our license-exempt Passive DAS Industrial Signal Booster. This product benefits from:

✓ 3G / 4G / LTE Voice and Data
✓ Multi-Carrier Support with Carrier Switching
✓ Indoor / Outdoor NEMA 4 Rated
✓ Network Safe

The Results

All targeted areas of the university now receive strong and consistent voice and data coverage across all four networks

University employees can now easily communicate with all internal and external stakeholders, including local authorities, suppliers, partners and students.

Staff and students now benefit from the health and safety, productivity and operational advantages of being able to use mobile devices on the move within the building.

Our products are licence-exempt and fully comply with Ofcom’s UK Interface requirement 2102 (IR2102) (UK) and ComReg S.I.No.283 of 2018 (Ireland).
