Background

Keltbray is the main contractor in the demolition works at The Heygate Estate in Elephant & Castle, London.

Opened in 1965, Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre was one of the first American-style indoor malls to open in the UK. It housed over 100 shops over three levels, surrounded by a public square and incorporated transport links.

The Elephant & Castle Partnership is a regeneration project with 24 core areas, including offices, housing, transport, education, community and park developments.

The Challenge

Keltbray’s project – demolishing the old shopping centre and rebuilding new shops, restaurants, a cinema and grass-roots venue as well as 1,000 homes and a landmark building for the London College of Communication – is set to take many years to complete. Keltbray’s project offices were located within the arches of the viaduct, underneath the existing railway lines, meaning the mobile signal was non-existent. This had a massive effect on employee communications and health and safety, and Boost Pro Systems, having already provided a similar solution at a separate Keltbray office, was called in to provide a solution.

“We’re keen to ensure the local community and stakeholders are well informed of our plans. As part of our commitment to the community, we will be offering employment opportunities to people living in the local area. We have also secured funding to deliver training – making it an excellent opportunity for those who are looking for a role within the local area.”

Holly Price – Skills and Communities Director, Keltbray

The Solution

For this particular project we were able to mount an external high-gain antenna to the project office underneath the viaduct, ensuring cable runs were kept to a minimum, whilst still managing to ensure the signal gain was maximised.

We placed three coverage units within the project offices, ensuring the entire internal office area was covered with full Vodafone coverage.

This project leverages our licence-exempt Passive DAS Industrial Signal Booster. This product benefits from:

✓ 3G / 4G / LTE Voice and Data
✓ Multi-Carrier Support with Carrier Switching
✓ Indoor / Outdoor NEMA 4 Rated
✓ Network Safe

The Results

All areas of the office now receive full Vodafone LTE voice and data coverage

Employees can now easily communicate with all stakeholders, including suppliers, partners, head office and the public.

The team now benefits from health and safety, productivity and operational advantages of being able to use mobile devices on the move within the site offices.

Our mobile repeater products are licence-exempt and fully meets the regulatory requirements in the UK (Ofcom SI 2018/399) and Ireland (ComReg S.I.No.283 of 2018)
